Tonight, Jim received his call sign. He was concerned it might become bologna because that happens to be a word he uses (although his flight buddies assure him he could say other words). But no, they went with Buddy. Yup, as in Buddy the ultra friendly, happy-go-lucky, abnormally large elf. As the Squadron Commander shook Jim's hand, he said that he'd never given a more fitting name. I'd say it is a compliment, actually! Jim is always so positive and optimistic. Of course being nearly 6'5 in the cockpit of an attack airplane may bring images of Buddy to mind as well... The other guys there also received assignments of where they'll be stationed next. We are anxious to get back home with family and friends, but watching our friends get assignments to Korea then on to Spain is pretty exciting. (Congrats, guys!)

That is great. That really makes us laugh. That is one of Bridger's all-time favorite movies, and Jayden's too. One of the few things Jayden asked Santa for this year was a picture of Buddy the elf, although, I thought Santa had forgotten this gift I now see he is delivering it by different means... Buddy himself will be living nearby soon! I know Jimmy has always had a sweet tooth, but hopefully he didn't earn this nickname by eating gum from under tables or by pouring maple syrup on everything he eats. We love it! Congratulations Buddy.
Besides being big and friendly, Buddy has an inherent goodness that is refreshing. Glad to see the CO recognizes that quality. Not to mention, Buddy makes boku bucks at the box office. It's not Teddy, but it's close. (And it's not Bologna, so that's good.) Congrats, Buddy. What call names did they come up with for the other guys -- maverik, iceman, goose?
Umm, this is a family blog- we won't mention other nominated names... Let's just say Buddy is nice- it could be worse. Much worse.
Perfect!
Way to go, buddy. I think that is a very fitting name. I'm glad they didn't go with Rainman.
I can't think of a more fitting and awesome call sign! Perfect!
Does this mean that when he communicates up there, he says, "Buddy the Elf. What's your favorite color?"
We are (all the boys in the family) quoting Buddy from Elf daily. That is a compliment. And I bet they also did not know that Jimmy believes in the same 4 food groups as elves- candy, candy canes, candy corn, and maple syrup. Is Jimmy still the worlds biggest sugar baby? I have to admit though that Rasta Claus is also fitting.
I had no idea call signs were assigned and not chosen by the pilots themselves! Very cool. And I am totally envisioning Jim just like Buddy all hunched inside his cockpit. What a great compliment, too!
Also, glad you guys had a fun trip to Mesa and got some Bahama Bucks while there. :)
