As mentioned below, my parents made a quick, surprise visit a few weeks ago. The kids were absolutely delighted! This ended up being a surprise because they weren't sure if it was going to work out (and I did NOT want to deal with the disappointment, if they didn't come!) So it was a fun surprise.
However, Jim believes in what he appropriately calls the Grandma effect.
(Alicia, please correct me if I'm using effect/affect inappropriately.)
It started back when we were dating and would visit his grandma who lived close to where I was going to school. He would call her up and tell her we were going to be visiting at least a day in advance, so she could enjoy the anticipation of our visit for a day or two beforehand. If we're going on a trip, we typically talk it up for days before, getting the kids excited about it.
So which do you think is more affective?

OK so I think both are very affective. It depends on the situation. Surprises are great when you don't want dissapointment if the thing doesn't work out but anticiaption is half the fun of the event. good question!!
I think you're good. :) Although, Laurel corrected me on this a couple weeks ago.
I really love you and your family. Come visit again soon!
