calling all CAMERA guru's

I need some expert (or just opinionated) advice and quick! My sweet Jimmy bought a Nikon D60 from Costco as an (*early*) birthday gift for me. It is a 6.o, comes with 2 image stabilizing lenses... and looks amazing.
But we received a Costco advertizing e-mail, advertising the Nikon D40 for $400 less! Or the Cannon Rebel XSi 12.2 for $150 less than the D60. I am frugal, but when spending this kind of money, want to go ahead and get the most for my $$. My main purposes are to blog crisp pictures of our growing kids and print them into books.
Whadya think???????

I just got the XSi and love it. We really compared the two (Nikon and Canon) and there are miniscule differences. The professionals say you really cant go wrong with either. The reason I didnt go w/ the D40 (and I really looked at it) is the megapixels. I know everyone says you'll be fine w/ 6.0 but I figure things are only going to get more sophisticated, why start out on the bottom? I've heard its easier to get lenses etc for the Canon. Good luck! Let us know

I've absolutely loved my Nikon (just bought another, the D90!). My main gripes with the D40 and D60 are they don't auto focus with most (if not all) of the Nikkor DX series lenses (not the ones that come in their kits). Everything D80 and higher does, however. Nikon is coming out with a bunch of new lenses and with in the next few months and will have just as much to offer as Canon in that department. If you're not really planning on buying any extra lenses, than the non-auto focusing doesn't really matter. Canon's AF motors are in each lens, not the camera (like Nikon, again it's only the D40 and 60 that lack it).

All of that is probably more confusing than helpful! Sorry! It's a tough one! Good luck!

We looked at the Costco offering and chose the Canon xsi. It is by far the best value: most features, highest mega-pixels, newest design at a very good price. They keep the price low by not including an extra tele-photo lens. At first blush the extra lens seems like it would be great to have. But, as Nate, and Jan will tell you, the extra lens that you will want is not that one. So, IMO get the most camera now and add a better lens later when you are ready.

Oh, I forgot . . . you've GOT to go PLAY w/ them first. Each feels different in your hand. Find out what works for you. Tony really wanted to get me the D80 etc because they are the best deal for your $$ (they are the semi-professional cameras that do EVERYTHING). I hate them though because they are way too big for my hands - they fit great in Tony's but not mine. It is an expensive habit (camera, lenses, SD cards, bags etc) but I think it is well worth it! For the next couple weeks you'll be so busy trying to figure out all the dang buttons you'll never blog!

I looked into so many different cameras...it is so hard to decide. I finally went with the Nikon D80 because I eventually want to do photography as a business. If I weren't going to do that, I probably would have done something a little less. I LOVE the D80. I like where all the buttons are and the quality of the pictures. I know a lot of people who love Canon. I have never had a Canon, so I don't know. Good luck...it is so hard to decide!
